Psychological assessment uses formal measures of learning, cognition, executive functioning, and personality to identify a wide range of mental health concerns.
Psychoeducational (or psychoed) assessments help identify abilities that are seen in range of presentations from giftedness to learning disabilities. At the core, a psychoeducational assessment combines several tests to highlight one's strengths and areas that would benefit from support. Assessments of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also tested this way in children and adolescents. All psychoeducational assessments include a report and debrief. The report can be shared with school staff or healthcare providers because it contains recommendations for further school-based interventions and care.
Clinical diagnostic assessments go by many names and highlight underlying mental health diagnoses to assist with specific treatment planning. The types of assessments used will depend on the referral question and the overall purpose.
All assessments are billed based on the amount of hours required, this including interviews, scoring and interpreting measures, report preparation and writing, and consultation and debriefing. Psychoeducational assessments range from 8-10 hours, clinical diagnostic and mental health assessments range from 3-5 hours, and adult ADHD assessments range from 3-4 hours. Certain referral questions (such as dissociative disorders) may require more time because of the types of assessments used. Fees for assessment are in accordance with the Psychologists' Association of Alberta's Recommended Fee Schedule, which can be found below:
